The importance of Community Health in Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa must be underscored. What is community health? Community health is a term used to describe the well-being of a group of people who tent to live in the same geographic area. This includes reducing the spread of and eliminating disease, poverty, and providing a heathy and safe environment.

Guidance and Counseling

SAMOCRI members as well as resource persons offer guidance and counseling services to properly and effectively advice women of child bearing age in safe motherhood and child survival strategy techniques.

Filling the Gap with CHWs

April 27, 2021  The NPHCDA, SPHCDA and Partners are unrelenting in their effort to strengthen the Primary Health Care System at community level and reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality. In addition, alongside activities to vaccinate Nigerians against COVID-19 vaccine.

The CHIPS train has been steadily rolling across the country. Between January and April 2021:• Four (4) States – Kaduna, Borno, Ebonyi and Bauchi conducted State Training of Trainers to build a pool of state trainers in readiness to training of CHIPS personnel and their supervisors.Nasarawa and Niger States conducted refresher trainings in March across the implementing LGAs to reinforce knowledge and skills needed for CHIPS Programme Implementation.Borno State commenced phased training of CHIPS Personnel (CHIPS Agents and CEFPS) and their supervisors in 12 wards across 3 LGAs.Niger State Govt. formally launched the CHIPS programme with a flag-off by His Excellency, the Executive Governor, in Minna.

The hallmark of the CHIPS programme training is a comprehensive curriculum which incorporates adult learning methodologies. Photo attached shows participants writing a Pre-test during the Borno State STOT.

Every CHIPS training begins with a Pre-test and ends with a Post-test, one of the ways used to assess participants’ improvement.CHIPS programme facilitators are skilled individuals who have successfully completed CHIPS Programme trainings which includes; adult training methodologies.

Drawing from their wealth of experience and skills, they are able to provide effective facilitation for the programme.Role plays are an important component of the CHIPS Programme training as it allows participants simulate key skills required by CHIPS agents in a setting that allows for feedback.

Demonstrations enable participants to observe skills necessary to the CHIPS agents’ work and practice in the classroom setting before practicing in the field. Attached are photos of demonstrations carried out during CHIPS programme trainings.

During CHIPS Programme trainings, participants have the opportunity to practice skills learnt in the classroom with two (2) visits to the local community and one (1) visit to a nearby health facility.

CHIPS Programme cannot be implemented without buy-in & ownership from the State Govt. Therefore, visit from State Govt. to supervise & monitor trainings are always appreciated by participants & facilitators alike.(Photo) Visit from HCH, Ebonyi State to monitor the STOT.Refresher trainings are conducted for CHIPS Personnel and their supervisors.
